Currency control requirements in Serbia

Currency control in the Republic of Serbia is regulated by the Law on Foreign Exchange Transactions - Law, decisions of the National Bank of Serbia). Settlements and transfers on the territory of Serbia between residents and (or) non-residents are carried out in the national currency - dinars. However, there are a number of exceptions, including the payment of wages to residents of Serbia sent to work in another country, payments for software (Article 34 of the Law).

Citizens of the Republic of Serbia are recognized as currency residents of Serbia, but Serbian citizens who have lived abroad for more than a year cease to be currency residents. Foreign citizens are also recognized as currency residents of Serbia if they stay in Serbia for more than one year on the basis of a residence permit or a work visa (Article 2 of the Law).

For currency residents of Serbia, there are a number of restrictions on transactions on foreign accounts, including the obligation to report on such transactions.
As a general rule, free storage of money abroad is not provided - it is allowed to keep money abroad for a limited list of grounds (for example, when working abroad, when selling real estate abroad) and their transfer to Serbia is required within 30 days after the termination of such grounds .

In addition, currency residents of Serbia must notify the opening of accounts abroad within 30 days, as well as report on the balances of such accounts.

Foreign citizens have the right to open accounts, including in foreign currency, in banks in Serbia.

However, there may be restrictions in your country of citizenship - select the appropriate country here.

In particular, such restrictions may be due to the fact that Serbia does not automatically exchange financial information with the Russian Federation.
